The Thirteenth Tale

I’ve been seeing this book on reading lists for a while now but I never got around to reading it. I finally managed to find it and I am definitely happy that I read it!

This book is told in the voice of Margaret, a young woman with a passion for books that she has inherited from a father. Together, they run a bookstore. Once in a while, Margaret decides to write a review or a paper on a person of interest. She likes her quiet life away from the limelight. Until she receives a letter from Ms. Vida Winter, a celebrated author who is known by everyone in the country. In the letter, Margaret is asked to visit Ms. Winter to write her biography. Margaret is uncertain as to why she was chosen, especially since many have tried (and failed) to get a successful biography from this noted author. But curiosity gets the better of her and she accepts the offer. As Ms. Winter begins to tell the story of her life, Margaret finds herself tangled up in the many secrets that surround Vida. But as she delves further and further into the mystery, she begins to deal with the ghosts in her own life.

I absolutely adored this book. It was dark and gothic and beautifully written. It had so much depth and character and I never could have guessed the real story. This is the kind of book I would buy and read multiple times. It was complex in a way I couldn’t imagine and I was sucked in right away. I literally could not put this book down! I’ve heard that they have done a movie for this so I’m excited to watch it when I get the chance! Please add this to your must-read list! I promise you won’t regret it!
