The Cabinet of Curiosities by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child – Pendergast series #3

I have been raving about this series since the first book, The Relic. It has the eccentric yet intelligent detective, a science aspect, and a crazy storyline that somehow manages to work. I had high hopes when I began to read this novel, especially since it was my way of celebrating my last final. So here is my review:

During a routine demolition, the construction crew unearth the remains of a charnel house. Inside ate thirty-six bodies, all of which have been mutilated more than a century ago. The unusual nature of this discovery brings FBI Special Agent Pendergast to the scene. But even as he starts his investigation into this old crime, identical killings start to terrorize the city. The discovery of the charnel house has unleashed a nightmare that no one could ever have imagined. And it may even be impossible to stop it.

I am sad to say that this novel was a let-down for me. There were so many holes in the plot and in the overall flow of the story that it was hard for me to even push through and finish the novel. I know that science fiction strays quite far from actual science but this story took that to a whole other level. The methods in which Pendergast solved the case were hard to believe; I mean, when do you hear of someone using memory crossing as a way of solving a crime?! And the connections between Pendergast and the killer were ridiculous and just too darn random to believe. To be honest, I’m still in shock over how this novel turned out in comparison to the previous ones in this series. I may choose to continue reading more in the series, just to see if this was an anomaly, but if the next book continues in this same vein, then I may just have to let this one go.

If you have read this novel or this series, let me know what you think! Should I continue or is it a lost cause? And when do you know if something is worth pushing through? Have you ever had a bad experience with a series? I hope to hear from you all soon!
